WaterSMART Grants

Through WaterSMART Grants, the Bureau of Reclamation provides financial assistance to water managers for projects that seek to conserve and use water more efficiently, provide in-stream benefits, investigate and develop water marketing strategies, prevent any water-related crisis, or otherwise contribute to water supply sustainability in the Western United States.  Cost-shared projects that can be completed within two or three years are selected annually through a competitive process.

Three categories of WaterSMART Grants are offered through separate Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs). These include an FOA for WaterSMART Water and Energy Efficiency Grants; an FOA for Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects; and an FOA for the development of Water Marketing Strategies.  Funding opportunities for WaterSMART Grants are typically posted in the fall of each year.

Eligible applicants for all WaterSMART Grants FOAs include: states, tribes, irrigation districts, water districts, or other organizations with water or power delivery authority in the Western United States.
